The neighborhood has everything — historic Creole cafes, elegant cocktail havens, hole-in-the-wall po’ boy shops, and decadent fine-dining

The French Quarter is the oldest square mile in New Orleans and home to more restaurants and bars per square block than any other neighborhood. This guide is a varied cross-section of restaurants in the Vieux Carre, from historic places that sell iconic dishes (Johnny’s Po-Boys and Brennan’s) to cocktail destinations (Jewel of the South and Manolito) to special occasion restaurants (Restaurant R’evolution and Arnaud’s).

Consider this list a starting point for exploring the Vieux Carre table. There are surprising and delicious treasures along the way, so don’t be shy about trying them all.
Where to soak in the best views of the city with a cocktail in hand

It’s prime outdoor dining and imbibing season in New Orleans — and that should be shouted from the rooftops, preferably with a cocktail in hand.

With so many new hotels in the Crescent City, several rooftop bars have opened over the years, from Hot Tin in the Ponchartrain to the Pool Club at Virgin Hotels New Orleans, making a one-day staycation easier than ever. For this map, only rooftops open to the public are included (as opposed to guests only). Here are New Orleans’s best rooftops for when drinks calls for a side of stunning views.

Where to eat in New Orleans

More often than not, tipsters, readers, friends and family of Eater ask us: Where should I eat right now? What are the new restaurants? What haven't I heard of? What's everyone talking about? And while the Eater 38 is a crucial resource covering old standbys and neighborhood essentials across the greater New Orleans area, it is not a chronicle of the 'it' places of the moment.

Thus, we offer the Eater Heatmap, which will change continuously to always highlight where the hungry crowds are flocking to at the moment. These spots cover high-end and affordable dining for both lunch and dinner, with the occasional addition of important bakeries and breakfast spots.

Generally speaking, the restaurants on the heat map have been around for 6 months or less and all of them are serving up some cuisine that has the city buzzing. The restaurants are listed alphabetically in this map and are not ranked.

This month, the Heatmap says goodbye to Tavolino, an excellent pizza spot and lounge conveniently located across from the ferry landing in Old Algiers. The list sees the addition of Briquette and Two Sisters on the West Bank.

A snapshot of New Orleans dining

It's time to update the Eater 38, your answer and ours to any question that begins, "Can you recommend a restaurant?"

This highly elite group of destinations are the places that you should go to tonight, tomorrow, and again and again. These are places that we think must exist, places that have impacted or represent the constantly evolving culinary canon of New Orleans. Looking for the hottest places in town? Turn to the Eater Heatmap instead.

The Eater 38 is updated quarterly, and are listed geographically rather than ranked. This time around, two restaurants join the list: Casamento's, Magazine Street's 1920s era oyster bar (now back from its summer hiatus); and Lilette, John Harris' seductive Uptown sparkler.

To make room, it's time to say goodbye (for now) to Sylvain and Pizza Delicious.

All restaurants must have been open at least six months to appear on this list. Send your tips and your nominations right here, or feel free to share thoughts in the comments.
