Opening in the CBD summer 2017

Big news this week for Pythian Market, the hotly anticipated food hall hitting the CBD by late summer 2017.

Beloved taco truck La Cocinita and bagel hotspot Laurel Street Bakery have both come aboard as opening vendors, according to a press release. They’ll join previously-announced grilled cheese hub Frencheeze and its juice bar Squeezed as the first of 19 food options expected for the spot, which will be the third revitalized neighborhood food hall to hit New Orleans since 2015, alongside St. Roch Market (chugging along on St. Claude Ave since April 2015, but not without controversy) and Dryades Market (which got off to a rocky start on O.C Haley Blvd. in April 2016, and is still rather on shaky ground).

Pythian Market is expected to have a food truck rally vibe, though with air conditioning and seating in the 20,000-square-foot space, located on the ground floor of an upcoming mixed-use development at 234 Loyola Avenue ie. right smack in the middle of the medical schools/downtown office crowd lunch frenzy zone.

The Pythian Building, which is currently being redeveloped by Green Coast, ERG Enterprises and Crescent City Community Land Trust, will also include office space, housing, and more retail.

Over a dozen hot new restaurants

While fall in New Orleans has ushered in numerous anticipated restaurants— including major expansions from chefs Ray Gruezke, Isaac Toups, Emeril Lagasse and Susan Spicer with about thirty new spots opening since late September—December 2016 seems destined to keep pace, as does the winter season in general.

Over the next few months, New Orleanians will see big debuts from well-known names, including new eateries from chefs Phillip Lopez, Michael Gulotta, Rob Bechtold and Aaron Burgau. There are major new food hall plans for downtown and a NY-based empire will head to Freret.

Winter restaurants represent a little bit of everything: Barbecue, roof top boozing, baked goods, upscale and casual Southeast Asian eats, and both traditional and modern bistro dining. There are neighborhood gems and lots to look forward to all over town, so sit back relax, and start planning your 2017 feasting schedule right now.

The owner will also launch a juice bar in the food hall

The CBD’s forthcoming food hall Pythian Market has announced two of its vendors. Local rolling sandwich slinger Frencheeze food truck will put down more permanent roots in the building next year. Additionally Frencheeze owner, Jason King plans to open a new juice bar concept called Squeezed in Pythian Market that will serve salads, smoothies and fresh juices.

King, a Boston native, launched his food truck business in New Orleans in 2012, but says that since then the scene has become crowded. “It’s a great location,” King says of the market in a release. “Another reality is that the food truck scene is getting saturated and this allows us to go into the part of the CBD that doesn’t allow food trucks.” The food hall development also offers a similar feel to a food truck rally, notes King, with the added benefit of “tables and air conditioning.”

Part of a mixed-use redevelopment, the market at 234 Loyola Ave. will feature 19 vendors. The freshly renovated Pythian is expected to debut in 2017. Stay tuned.
