Before New Orleans heat lessens the appeal, an outdoor picnic with a few choice loved ones is a great idea. This bright and cheery cafe from Dickie Brennan is perfect for a picnic — it’s in the heart of City Park adjacent to the children’s museum. Acorn is open everyday (breakfast is served all day — good breakfast burritos), with a menu ranging from pizza to salad bowls and sandwiches. There’s even a charcuterie picnic for two, with house cured meats and artisan cheeses, $30 with water, $35 with canned beer or wine. The outdoor patio overlooking the lake feels like a picnic without the ants.

Get a falafel sandwich or the smoked chicken salad on on semolino. Or nosh on cheese and veggie plates perfect for sharing. Call at least 30 minutes ahead for pick up — they also seat a few patrons outside and at the bar.

Piece of Meat offers the likes of the Delicate Lady, a kick ass smoked local chicken salad with a blueberry barbecue sauce and a smoked pastrami on rye with coleslaw and havarti. Get the boudin eggrolls too — you’re welcome.

Cash only and way way cheap, this French Quarter deli and market has a voluminous menu. Open Wednesday through Sunday for dining in and curbside takeout, Picnic turns the heat up with Crystal hot sauce pulp added to the crust, available in tenders, thighs, and a sandwich.
