Halloween is always a blast in New Orleans, and celebrations abound this year (despite the holiday falling on a Monday). Restaurants, hotels, and bars are hosting special brunches, costume parties, and murder mystery dinners — and that’s not including themed cocktails, over-the-top decor, and costumes everywhere you look. Below are top picks for celebrating Halloween and Dia de Los Muertos in and around New Orleans in 2022, with good food and drinks in mind. On Thursday, November 3, the Marigny’s gorgeous Hotel Peter and Paul is hosting a Dia de Los Muertos dance party and fundraiser in their renovated church area, complete with a lineup of live music and mezcal cocktails by sister restaurant Bacchanal. In line with Dia de Los Muertos tradition, guests are invited to bring their own contributions (flowers, food, memorabilia) to the altar for a ceremony led by Rizzo Macedonia López, a local curandero and bruja who specializes in altar-building. Entry is free with $10 to $20 donations welcome, and all proceeds will go to ISLA, an immigration services and legal advocacy organization.

Boucherie’s casual spinoff Bourree is putting its large outdoor dining area to good use the weekend before Halloween, throwing a family-oriented BOO-ree BBQ Bash on Saturday, October 22. Catch music, a kids costume contest, pumpkin crafts, and more (tickets for kids are $15 and include one pumpkin for decorating and balloons. The restaurant is also hosting a coat drive during the event, which takes place from noon to 3 p.m.

In addition to a special menu offered from October 28 through 31, on Halloween (Monday, October 31), it will host a Witching Hour party from 4 p.m. to midnight. In addition to specialty drinks like the Poison Apple or Unreliable Narrator, the kitchen will serve frogs’ legs and a Baked Casper — like a Baked Alaska, but with fall toppings atop a mochi waffle.
