After selling her beloved bread and bagels at farmers markets, pop-ups, and for home delivery throughout the pandemic, local baker Kate Heller has opened her much-anticipated bakery on Bell Street. Leo’s Bread, open Wednesday through Sunday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., is serving Heller’s gorgeous bagels and bagel sandwiches, croissants, sandwiches on semolina, and daily bread varieties.

Thank goodness for Hell Bent bagels, the newest bagel kitchen to join New Orleans’s pop-up scene. On Sunday mornings, these awesome versions (and bagel sandwiches) can be found at Trap Kitchen during the Bywater Market on Poland Avenue. They also do bagel deliveries on Wednesday, along with tubs of schmear — just call 504-435-5983 or place an order through the website. Take note, coffee shops and bakeries, the bagels are also available to order for wholesale.

This former Decatur Street vegan/vegetarian deli, now in its new home on a Marigny corner, has long been a destination for New York bagels. Owner Bryant Wilms has them shipped from a New York-based supplier and offers an array of freshly made cream cheeses to pair with, as well as high-quality lox, the only non-vegetarian option at the shop. If it’s a dozen varied bagels you seek, be sure to order early, as availability declines as the day goes on.

Bagels are only available on Friday at Bywater Bakery, but they are worth planning your weekend around. Much like anything this joyful Ninth Ward bakery makes, the craft is impeccable and the results divine. Choose to add a spread of schmear or not, just order by 2 p.m. on Friday.

Flour Moon is also a pop-up operation, one born out of that specific and unrelenting craving for a good bagel, previously difficult to find in the Crescent City. Breanne Kostyk’s’s excellent bagels can be found in pumpernickel, everything, sea salt, onion-sumac, and more, along with fresh cream cheese, every Sunday at Coffee Science.
