For Thanksgiving, bakeries in New Orleans — which stands on ancestral Indigenous land originally inhabited by the Chitimacha and Chahta Yakni (Choctaw) peoples — are hoping diners will leave the desserts to them. And what better excuse to try out this year’s creations than to free up more time to spend with loved ones? Once you’ve planned your main meal for November 24, consult this guide to seek out the right pie to end with, from the traditional to the unexpected.

Bywater Bakery is consistent in offering the most options for Thanksgiving pies, and this year is no different. Choose from butterscotch pecan; chocolate peanut butter; apple rosemary; sweet potato chiffon; butternut squash pecan praline; and the amazing blueberry elderflower (with a vegan crust). They’re all $30; a good deal for pies of this quality.

Cypress Cakes is one of the newest bake shops in town, opened in early 2022 by local baker Margo Robert. For Thanksgiving, choose from four cakes: pumpkin, carrot, pumpkin cheesecake, and satsuma ginger; and four pies: fluffy pumpkin, pecan, key lime, and double crust apple.
