- New Orleans officials shut down a bar and music venue owned by beloved New Orleans musician Kermit Ruffins on Wednesday, “after owners ignored repeated calls and warnings to stop violating the rules and guidelines relative to the opening of bars.” The city’s statement said that Kermit’s Treme Mother-in-Law Lounge and another address down the street have “contributed to major problems with large gathering of massive crowds under the N. Claiborne bridge between Esplanade and St. Bernard Ave. The owners and management of these venues left us with no other options but to immediately shut them down by means of formal legal notice, i.e. cease and desist orders.”
- The office of New Orleans Mayor Latoya Cantrell said this week that the administration would announce the easing of some coronavirus restrictions for the parish on Thursday. Following a surprise announcement right before the weekend lifting the ban on takeout alcohol sales from restaurants, bar owners are hopeful for similar concessions or the ability to reopen at 25 percent. Spokesperson Beau Tidwell said that COVID-19 case counts the last two weeks have been “very encouraging,” and that “we hope to be able to move forward with some easement on Thursday.”
- The co-founders of New Orleans-born brunch chain Ruby Slipper have started an emergency fund for hospitality workers in the region. The Lagniappe Krewe Emergency Relief Fund will provide one-time grants of $500 to hospitality sector workers impacted by the pandemic, Hurricane Laura, or Hurricane Sally. Applications are open through Oct. 23.
- A number of local chef/owners of popular New Orleans spots are working with Paradigm Gardens, New Orleans’s only K-12 school with garden-based curriculum, on a series of cooking classes for students. Among the instructors will be Daily Beet owner Dylan Maisel teaching a fermented food class and Turkey & The Wolf chef and owner Mason Hereford teaching a cooking class.
- The New Orleans Wine & Food Experience will continue the socially-distant wine pairing dinner series that it launched over the summer, partnering with restaurants including Brennan’s, Gianna, Boucherie, Copper Vine, and more. Check NOWFE’s website for the schedule.
