After a year and a half of slinging bubbly, wood-fired pizza in Mid City, the team behind Echo’s Pizza will close their shop this weekend. And in the latest expansion of restaurant group BRG Hospitality (formerly Besh Restaurant Group), it will become the second location of Pizza Domenica, reports NOLA.com.
The restaurant, located in a historic corner building on Banks Street, brought together the pair behind Mediterranean spot 1000 Figs and Kate Heller, baker and proprietor of Leo’s Bread. The crew opened Echo’s at the end of January 2018 after a lengthy renovation of the space, and it quickly became a neighborhood destination for pizza, and more recently, its wood-fired bagels.
Theresa Galli told the newspaper that her and Cady plan to focus on 1000 Figs, also in Mid City, and their recently opened Little Fig food stall in Pythian Market. 1000 Figs has been around since the end of 2014, and is a beloved spot for falafel, hummus platters, and other vegetarian-friendly Mediterranean fare. They will also expand the catering side of their business.
Heller plans to open her own bakery, and will return to farmer’s markets while she searches for a location. She launched Leo’s Bread five years ago when she started selling her loaves outside of Pagoda Cafe and gained a loyal following. Galli and Cady were one of her first wholesale customers.
BRG Hospitality told NOLA.com the company plans to open the new Pizza Domenica location in the fall, and that it will have a similar menu and pizza happy hour as the Uptown original. Most recently, BRG closed its eight-month-old Magazine Street restaurant, Warbucks, at the beginning of July.
