Beloved French Quarter Grab and Go Spot Small Mart Might Be Moving

The market’s landlord plans to sell building

Small Mart, an easily-overlooked Decatur Street deli and grocery specializing in outstanding vegan and vegetarian street food, is looking for a new space after learning the building’s owner is looking to sell.

In a post to Small Mart’s Instagram earlier this week, proprietors announced the market’s lease was up and that their landlord had no plans to renew, instead looking to sell the building. Importantly, the message noted looking to stay in the French Quarter, (as long as its not too close to Jackson Square).

Small Mart became a beloved neighborhood staple since Bryant Wilms took over the space eight years ago, with its popularity growing as it evolved from a convenience store to serving some of the best food in the Quarter. Wilms’s wide-ranging takeout menu is influenced by the Indian and Pakistani specialties served by the previous owners, Wilms’ upbringing in Brazil and Queens, NY, and of course, New Orleans. Known for its NYC-shipped bagels, a daily curry, veggie samosas, and vegan po-boys, it is also one of a limited number of places in the neighborhood catering to non meat-eaters.

Small Mart’s announcement comes shortly after a similar situation forced the closure of the French Quarter location of souvenir shop Fleurty Girl, whose owner warned of the neighborhood’s rapidly rising real estate prices forcing out other small businesses.
