Coulis, the charming Prytania Street breakfast and lunch jewel located near Touro Hospital, is permanently closing its doors next week. The announcement was made on Facebook.
The cafe’s story is one of perseverance: Less than two years after Chef James “Coulis” Leeming (formerly executive chef at Dick and Jenny’s) opened it with his wife, Heather, he died. He was 50 years old. Heather Leeming continued to run the restaurant, which became a breakfast standard, after that.
“Business has been really slow the past year and with summer upon us there is no way to keep the doors open. This was James and my dream to have our own place in his namesake with his creations. I need to be happy in the fact that he lived his dream before he passed away,” Heather Leeming said in a Facebook post.
Coulis was located in what was the longtime home of Bluebird Cafe, whose sign is on display in the Leah Chase Louisiana Gallery at The Southern Food and Beverage Museum.
