Edgar Caro, restaurateur behind Brasa Churrascería, Baru tapas, and Basin Louisiana seafood, has just opened Zócalo Mexican restaurant with Antonio Mata on Metairie Road a few doors down from Brasa, reports Ian McNulty.

Caro is originally from Columbia and Mata is originally from El Salvador, but they’re exploring a broader spectrum of Mexican food at the new eatery, from salsa made with peanuts to posole and flautas.

The space, occupied by Vega Tapas for two decades, has been fully renovated.

El Fogon, another restaurant slinging more authentic Mexican food, opened on Veterans Boulevard in Metairie earlier this month.

In metro New Orleans though, El Patio has reverted to the owner’s other restaurant concept, the more casual La Casita, after a failed attempt to offer more traditional Mexican food. La Casita serves more well-known Mexican fare like margaritas and tacos.

Opening hours are Tuesday through Sunday for dinner, with plans to add lunch and happy hour soon.
