The 10-month battle in the New Orleans beignet community has finally come to an end. 150-year old beignet outlet Morning Call just officially lost the location it’s occupied since 2012 — in City Park’s “casino building” — to Cafe du Monde.
After losing a bid to keep its spot in City Park last year, Park officials awarded a 10-year lease to competitor Café du Monde this past spring. Morning Call then filed suit against the Park, resulting in the nullification of Cafe du Monde’s lease as well as the bidding process itself, with a judge saying none of the shops had entirely followed the requirements. Bidding re-opened in September and this time around, it was Cafe du Monde who entered the winning number.
Morning Call previously closed it’s only other remaining location last April just before bidding for the City Park stand initially opened. While currently homeless, Morning Call’s owners have vowed to return to the city with a new location.
