New Orleans will keep riding the poke wave as fast-growing New York chain restaurant Pokéworks adds a location in Metairie’s Lakeside Shopping Center between Sucré and Bravo! Cucina Italiana this fall.
With a “Chipotle-style” assembly line, the restaurant serves poke burritos, poke bowls, and poke salads with options like ahi tuna, salmon, albacore tuna, scallops, and shrimp, as well as sous vide chicken and tofu. After choosing one of those, diners can add toppings like masago, seaweed salad, pickled ginger, spicy furikake, and sauces like umami shoyu, wasabi aioli, and spicy ginger.
The first Pokéworks swung open in New York’s Midtown in 2015 and quickly exploded to 18 locations in the U.S. and Canada with plans to have 100 by 2020.
Though poke has been sweeping the nation for several years now, New Orleans only recently joined that wave when homegrown Poke Loa opened its first shop on Magazine Street in February 2017. Poke Loa opened an Old Metairie outpost in October.
Here’s a rendering of the Lakeside Pokéworks spot.
