Dwight Henry is bringing his famous buttermilk drops to his newly opened Wink’s restaurant in Gentilly, reports Todd Price. He’s also serving affordable lunch and dinner with fried chicken, seafood, barbecue, stuffed bell peppers, and jambalaya, as well as breakfast pork chops and liver with grits for breakfast.
Henry wants to “cater to blue-collar people” and all the menu items, served cafeteria-style, are between $8 and $11, according to the report.
Henry once operated a Wink’s in the CBD and one in the French Quarter.
If Henry’s name sounds familiar, it might be from his work as an actor. He had a starring role in “Beasts of the Southern Wild” and also acted in “12 Years a Slave” and other films.
He also made headlines for a couple run-ins with the law. In 2016, a court convicted him of a highly publicized misdemeanor theft from the 7th Ward Buttermilk Drop Bakery, where Henry was the head baker for several years. He denied any wrongdoing.
Opening hours are 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.
