OPENING ALERT — Jack Rose, the highly anticipated debut from QED Hospitality, opens for dinner today. Jack Rose is replacing The Caribbean Room at The Pontchartrain Hotel; the latter, a throwback restaurant closed in mid-March. QED’s founders, Brian Landry and Emery Whalen were previously top managers at John Besh’s company. Friday lunch and Sunday brunch at Jack Rose both begin next week. [ADVOCATE]
OPENING ALERT — Todd A. Price profiles Rafik Abohattab, who just opened Torshi, a new stall at St. Roch Market. Abohattab, a native of Egypt, emigrated to the U.S. over a decade ago, eventually landing in New Orleans after traveling around the country. Abohattab serves his native cuisine at Torshi — expect next-level falafel (made with fava beans and sesame seeds, instead of the usual chickpeas), smoked baba ghanouj and tasty drinks like kushari mint tea and hibiscus rose water tea. Also, FYI: “Torshi” means “pickles” in Arabic — Abohattab makes his own. [NOLA.COM]
