After over 40 years near the Lakeside Shopping Center in Metairie, 24-hour beignet and coffee icon, Morning Call Coffee Stand, will close its doors at the end of April, reports Hanna Krueger at NOLA.COM.
Beignets don’t have a high mark-up, so financial stability depends on selling a lot of them. With rising rent prices and “10 or so coffee shops in a two mile radius,” the location wasn’t working anymore, Morning Call owners owners Bob and Mike Hennessey said in the report.
The Morning Call location at City Park has no plans to close. Rather, the owners are negotiating a long-term lease there. They would also like to open a shop in the French Quarter, where the emblematic brand got its start in the 1870s.
