A new bar is on its way to the CBD, with a focus on agave-based spirit mezcal.
According to NOLA.com, Espíritu Mezcaleria will open on Capdeville Street (near Magazine Street) sometime in December, with the city’s largest collection of the smoky liquor in one place.
Espíritu will take over the premises of gastropub Capdeville, which closed abruptly earlier this year.
A couple — Amanda Sesser and Jason Mitzen — are behind the bar, and will focus on smaller, family-operated distilleries in sourcing their mezcal. The two spent many months in Mexico researching, with Mitzen having completed a “Master Mezcalier” certification — specialized education in mezcal, including plenty of tasting.
Not strictly a bar, Espíritu will also serve small plates that will be pairable with mezcal — the couple will draw on a mix of Mexican culinary traditions from Baja California to the Yucatan Peninsula in devising the menu.
