New Orleans coffee vet, Tom Oliver, will open Coffee Science on S. Broad near the courthouse by the end of January, reports Ian McNulty, joining a growing number of new businesses in the area. Oliver, who has been in the coffee business since 1980, was once a Kaldi’s manager (the beloved lower Decatur coffee shop that closed in 2000) and Orleans coffee co-owner.

The cafe is primarily about coffee, but will include a menu of donuts and pastries, cold sandwiches, and ready-made salads. A few long-dead Kaldi’s drinks will be revived: The mocha frosted coffee and the Bavarian iced coffee.

In Oliver’s long coffee career, he’s also been a sort of coffee problem-solver, making use of his equipment, production, and crafting knowledge to help coffee shops solve whatever problems they were having. He knows the science behind coffee, hence the new coffee shop’s name.

A renovation on the building has already been completed.
