Catty Shack, a petite food shack churning out hard tacos and other tunes from a well-known and well-loved style of Tex-Mex cooking, landed in Gentilly. Austin native Catherine Smith is behind the project, reports Ian McNulty.
The short menu includes Texas hits like hard tacos with beef, shredded lettuce, and cheese; smoked brisket; fried catfish; breakfast tacos; queso; and guac. The taco stand also serves beer, wine, and sangria. As the menu grows, expect to see enchiladas, taco salads, and burritos join the list.
Smith, a former journalist, was a a partner at La Mezcla Mexicana at St. Roch Market. After that, she was known for popping up at Pal’s Lounge and Martine’s Lounge with her Tex-Mex cooking.
The restaurant is open for dinner (from 5 p.m.) Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday; lunch and dinner (from noon) Saturday and Sunday (closed Wednesday)
