After 40 years on Calhoun Street, Bud’s Broiler is shutting down its broilers and emptying out the last vats of hickory sauce at that location, reports the Uptown Messenger.
Jason Qadar, who is retiring after owning that restaurant for two decades, will make Sunday the final day for the iconic burger spot. He will continue to own the building with plans to lease it to El Libre.
He’s also selling the Bud’s Broiler he owns on the Westbank.
The Calhoun location of Bud’s Broiler has been serving the university area since 1978. Qadar took it over in 1995. It became the go-to spot for charcoal grilled burgers and split hot dogs with hickory sauce
Local mini-chain Bud’s Broiler has experienced some expansion this year, for the first time opening a shop outside of the New Orleans area — in Baton Rouge. It also opened a restaurant in River Ridge, which had a Bud’s Broiler years ago.
Bud’s Broiler on Calhoun will become El Libre in early 2018.
