Big Freedia's Soul Food Pop-Up Brings The Twerk-A-Mein To New Orleans

Watch Big Freedia cook in Cafe Reconcile's kitchen

Bounce superstar, Queen Diva, and esteemed wiggle releaser Big Freedia has recently jumped in the pop-up game, bringing her knack for soul food— inspired by her mother's cooking— to her native New Orleans with Big Freedia's Soul Food Pop Up.

Back in March, the pop-up served Twerk-a-Mein, Big Freedia's version of ya-ka-mein, at the Buku Music and Art Project to much acclaim. A cookbook is now in the works, as are potential plans for a food truck.

While all of Big Freedia's culinary plans are percolating— and potentially delayed by an impending sentence for her theft of federal Section 8 housing vouchers— do check out what her cooking is all about in Fuse's "Big Freedia: Queen of Bounce" finale, airing tomorrow night, Wednesday, August 10, at 10 p.m. CST. The episode features Cafe Reconcile— the Central City soul food restaurant and nonprofit that gives at-risk youths a chance to learn vital service industry skills—which allows Big Freedia to take over its kitchen to make stuffed bell peppers, macaroni and cheese, sweat peas, baked catfish, and white chocolate bread pudding.
