NEW ORLEANS - An Eater tipster forwarded the news of a new app that lets customers figure out the availability and pricing of boiled seafood based on location. New Orleans native Sheldon Williams began developing the app in the wake of the 2010 BP oil spill, when the local seafood industry was struggling. Use the app to find the freshest and closest crawfish, shrimp, oysters, and crab. "The app was developed to broaden the range of customers the fishermen can reach," says Williams. "I'm hoping the Seafood Locator will help fishermen and customers connect in a more innovative way." The app is available for free on iOS and Android. [Eaterwire]
LGD/UPTOWN - Mojo Coffee, with locations on Magazine and Freret Streets, entered the small-batch bean roasting biz in mid-2015, and owner Demian Estevez and barista-turned "roastmaster" Matt Cronin opened a roasting facility, Mojo Coffee Roasters, in the Black Pearl neighborhood uptown. According to a recent press release, "They stress quality by roasting in true small batch form, only six to eight pounds at a time so they can carefully sift through the beans, ensuring that every bag they roast meets strict quality standards." Mojo Coffee Roaster's initial roasts, Ethiopia Natural Hambela and Kenya Othaya Peaberry, have been well received by customers and critics alike, having scored in the mid-90s by Coffee Review. LOUISIANA - Todd Price reports that beloved local chip company, Zapp's, has released a new limited edition flavor in collaboration with Drago's, "Home of the Charbroiled Oyster." Putting the words "Charbroiled Oyster" on the package is slightly misleading, since it's actually a roasted garlic flavor with parmesan and spices, intended to evoke the famous oyster's topping. Nothing with the oysters themselves. Zapp's has also collaborated with Arnaudville brewery Bayou Teche to create a light, salty, refreshing, gose beer, using Zapp's blend of salt and vinegar chip spice for the style's traditional salt ingredient. Both the beer and the chips are currently available to purchase. [NOLA.com]
