Look Inside New Orleans' Hot New Barbecue Hub Frey Smoked Meat Co.

Officially open at Mid City Market

The hotly anticipated barbecue spot, Frey Smoked Meat Co., officially opens for dinner today in the Mid City Market, with Rue 127 chef and owner Ray Gruezke at the helm.

Chef Ray Gruezke has built a growing legion of fans over the past seven years with his small but often packed gem Rue 127, which opened in Mid City back in late 2010. For the past three years, he's also been making a name for himself as a pitmaster for the with a competitive barbecue team (2014 Hogs For The Cause award winner for ribs) and has now managed to mix his love of all thing smoky meats with his knack for well-executed comfort foods at a new Mid City eatery, Frey Smoked Meat Co.

The restaurant officially opens for dinner today, November 11, at 11 a.m. The menuincludes barbecue platters, brisket chili, buckets of biscuits, burgers and sandwiches, entrees including grilled redfish and fried chicken, crazy macaroni and cheese variations, and giant milkshakes. A full bar features 50+ whiskeys and beers to choose from, plus eight more brews on draft.

Gruezke named the restaurant for his great-great-great-grandfather, a 19th Century French Market vendor named Andreas Frey, who was known for his smoked sausage. His family then operated Lafayette-based slaughterhouse L.A. Frey and Sons for over a century.

As for the restaurant space, it features 80 seats inside and huge warehouse-style doors that open up to a patio with seating for 20, along with take-out and delivery options. There are televisions for games too.
