Finally, the news you've been waiting for. Yes, chef Alon Shaya opens the doors to his highly-anticipated Isreali restaurant Shaya at 11 a.m. today. While this restaurant is certain to be a falafel, kebab and hummus hot spot (and one of the 33 hottest new restaurants in America this year), Todd Price reports that the cuisine also draws upon North African, Bulgarian, and Polish influences, along with some Louisiana flavors, naturally. And since Alon Shaya is partners John Besh, that means the best pastry chefs in town Kelly Fields and Lisa White have created the dessert menu and signature breads and pita.
Style wise, the space still looks relatively similar to former stylish occupant Dominique's on Magazine. The courtyard is now home to juniper trees, string lighting, and a pomegranate tree (a symbol of Israel). One major change, though: The restaurant is now anchored by a wood burning oven, so do expect the best pita ever.
Here's the menu. It's a thing of beauty, folks.
