What a week for comebacks. Hot on the heels of fried chicken icon Fiorellas' heading to Gentilly, Ian McNulty now reports that former Freret Street soul food staple Dunbar's will open in Gert Town early next year. Owner Celestine Dunbar will resurrect Dunbar's Creole Cooking—which was forced to shutter on Freret due to Katrina flooding— at 7834 Earhart Blvd. with breakfast, lunch and dinner service. The operation will be much the same as the original, including the menu:
Specials ran through pork chops and mustard greens, candied yams, smothered cabbage, stuffed peppers, stuffed crabs and T-bone steaks. The key dishes were deeply flavorful red beans, well-seasoned, crunchy-crusted fried chicken and Creole gumbo with both okra and a bit of filé.
The name will be a tad different than the original though: Dunbar's Creole Cuisine. Expect a January opening.
