Commander's Palace, the Garden District institution dating back to 1880, doesn't actually date back to 1880, WGNO reports this week. Local historian Tonya Jordan confirms that real estate records, newspaper archives and the city directory all point to the original restaurant, Emile Commander's Palace Saloon, opening at the location in 1893. Naturally, owners Ti Martin and Lally Brennan are celebrating the century-old blunder with a new signature cocktail called The Oops. There are no plans to change the dates on the restaurant's plaque, floors, or matchbooks.
