Sandwich genius and former Coquette chef de cuisine Mason Hereford has returned from staging all over the country and has his sights set to open his new restaurant inside the former NOLA Smokehouse site on Jackson at Annunciation, right on the border of the Lower Garden District and the Irish Channel.

Todd Price reports that the Turkey and the Wolf will focus on southern ingredients and culinary traditions, with a sandwich heavy (but not sandwich exclusive) menu.

Half the menu at Turkey and the Wolf will be sandwiches, like a housemade ham sandwich, a chicken-fried steak sandwich or a spin on the banh mi with hogshead cheese and pig's ear.

"We're sandwich people," Hereford said, "but having worked with so many great purveyors we don't want to limit ourselves."

Hereford and partner Lauren Holton (who will oversee the front of house) hope to open in March or April of 2016.
