Hackers Steal Customer Credit Info From Mizado Cocina

WDSU reports that a security breach at ceviche/margarita powerhouse Mizado Cocina from May 9 to July 18 may have compromised credit/debit information for some 8,000 customers. Apparently, an identity-poaching malware called Backoff— "a new and previously undetected virus intended to target point of sale systems"— was detected in mid-July and has been removed. However, guests of the restaurant had already received fraudulent charges on their cards after eating there, which is how Mizado found out they had a hacker in the first place.

The sales system has been 'safe and secure' since July 18, according to Mizado operators Taste Buds Management. The Times-Pic reports that Mizado "is contacting customers and urges those who dined between May 9 and July 18 to review their account statements and take action to prevent identify theft, including notifying credit card companies and monitoring credit reports."

Mizado is also offering customers a year-long free credit protection service.
