In the dog days of this New Orleans August, boozing it up can take your mind off your troubles. (As long as it is accompanied by lots and lots of water drinking.) A few events this weekend appeal to a range of hooch preferences.
This afternoon/evening, August 15, SoBou is celebrating its second birthday by pairing up with Mississippi's Cathead Vodka (also celebrating two years in business) and holding an extended Happy Hour from 3-8pm featuring a punch du jour for $2, Cathead Tom Collins and vodka tasting, and Mississippi-inspired kitchen specials.
August 16 is National Rum Day, and as the northernmost Caribbean nation (as the saying goes), rum drinks can be found everywhere you turn. Check out the tiki, proto-tiki, and YOLO tiki at downtown bars Tiki Tolteca and Cane & Table. Or head over the the Old New Orleans Rum distillery for their tours at 2:00 and 4:00pm on Saturday (or Sunday). Sailor Jerry Rum is sponsoring a "Bloody Jerry" promotion at several restaurants and bars in the Marigny (Horn's, 13, R Bar, and Checkpoint Charlie's) and Tracey's uptown. If tempted, go hungry, because those garnishes will be epic.
Beer fans have the opportunity to dedicate all day to their favorite beverage during the Founders Brewing French Quarter Pub Crawl. Show up at 1pm at Johnny White's Bar on St. Peter Street, and then visit Yo Mama's, Finnegan's Easy, Molly's at the Market and Erin Rose to enjoy pints of Founders beers like All Day IPA, Dirty Bastard, and Centennial IPA. When the crawl ends, those still standing will be invited to an exclusive Founders pool party nearby, so bring your suits.
And drink lots of water.
