A Mission Chinese Food alum plans to open a new restaurant Red's Chinese at 3048 St. Claude Avenue in July, Todd Price reports. The building is next door to the Spellcaster, and at one point housed the Green Burrito. Red's Chinese has already been quietly operating as a pop-up delivery joint in the Bywater, but now couple/co-owners Amy Mosberger (formerly of Brooklyn restaurant Martha) and Tobias Womack (he of the 6-month Mission Chinese stint in New York, and also reportedly friends with Danny Bowien) are ready to branch out to brick-and-mortar. On the menu, per Price:
Kung pao pastrami, a Mission Chinese staple... But Womack makes the dish with Louisiana's holy trinity of onions, bell peppers and celery. Red's will build a bridge made of barbecue between China and the South. Tomatoes will be prominent. The clear flavors of classic Creole cooking, which Womack discovered in the Picayune cookbook, will also appear.
Along with The Picayune's Creole Cook Book, other menu influences include Eileen Yin-Fei Lo's Mastering the Art of Chinese Cooking, David Chang's Momofuku.
