Gambit's Megan Braden-Perry and The Times-Pic's Todd A. Price both report that St. Claude will soon be home to a new doner kebab sandwich shop. Kebab will open in the former Henry's Bakery & Deli at 2031 St. Claude (between St. Bernard and Elysian Fields) in March.
Owners Benjamin Harlow and Walker Reisman also founders of underground pop-up Pizza Speakeasy tell Braden-Perry that: "You can't really get good doner-style kebab sandwiches in New Orleans anywhere. You can get gyros and lamb and beef stuff, but nothing that's really centered on that wildly flavorful really crispy pork sandwich that is that German doner kebab-style sandwich or that Greek doner kebab-style sandwich." YES.
As for the menu, Pastry chef Elyse Manning will supply the house-baked bread for sandwiches, which will feature locally-sourced shredded rotisserie meat and a slew of house made European/Middle Eastern/American accoutrement. Other menu highlights will include hummus, falafel, Belgian frites, and beet and sweet potato fries. Plans are underway for monthly lamb roasts too.
Also of note, per Braden-Perry: "There will be a gallery behind the long lunch counter and three 4-foot diorama boxes at Kebab for visual artists to showcase their work. Kebab's owners also hope to host pop-ups there for their formal dining concept, Margaret's, which will eventually become a brick-and-mortar restaurant."
