Ian McNulty reviews Uptown's relatively new Turkish small plates hub Mezze this week: The doner is good, but the meze (small plates) are where it's at, with McNulty noting the hummus, dolmas (stuffed veg like grape leaves), kofta meatballs, and the more interesting palace manti, "a long, coiled string of dumplings... the filling an aromatic mix of ground beef, parsley and sumac" that along with a yogurt and tomato sauce "brings to mind a plate of nachos more than anything else." [Advocate]
Sarah Baird travels to Covington for a taste of "relatively undiscovered gem" Ox Lot 9:Inside the Southern Hotel, Besh Group alum/chef Jeffrey Hansell "has created a menu and ambience that are refreshingly simple and refined, elevating the humblest of Gulf Coast ingredients to new heights" and establishing the restaurant as an "up-and-coming anchor for Northshore fine dining." Also note, "a milky, tender fried quail is a sportsman gourmand's dream." [Gambit]
