The folks known for inciting a donut-frenzy LGD have now moved onto stoking the raging hand pie fire in Uptown. Yes, Sarah Baird reports that District Hand Pie & Coffee Bar is now open in the former Velvet Espresso space. On top of an array of sweet and savory hand pies--from cherry basil to kung pao chicken variations--there's also one-off creations including "monkey bread twists" and "inventive" coffee drinks including a Horachado cortado/horchata mash up. The stretch of Magazine surrounding Whole Foods is now looking like New Orleans' official pie and coffee hotbed, with third wave hottie HiVolt joining beloved piemakers P's & Q's in January.
