Root Squared Is Ruling at Happy Hour, Balcony Boozing, and Eclectic Drinks Right Now in The LGD

Square Root's upstairs lounge Root Squared is a destination all its own. Here's why.

Nearly a month after a former bar manager reportedly flicked off a customer and got fired from Root Squared, the upscale cocktail lounge is in the spotlight again, this time for good: as a hotspot for happy hour and great drinks all around, according to The Advocate's Allison Alsup.  Bartender Ian Clarke has stepped up to create original libations, "approachable versions of old standbys" and house made shrubs, and while a tad on the pricey side, they're worth the trip for cocktail enthusiasts and fancy types.  The bar (and restaurant) also boasts an extensive wine list thanks to their level-three sommelier Liz Dowty.

Not looking to go broke? Behold the happy hour specials:

5 p.m. to 7 p.m. happy hour... offers well-made basics like Highballs, Old Fashioneds and Bucks at $5 a pop, bottled beer in the $3 to $7 range and daily selections of wine at $6.

The bar itself "feels like the living room of an international sophisticate, say James Bond," and the balcony features a decent amount of seats overlooks Magazine. The upstairs small plates menu includes some of the best steak tartare in town, plus selections from Philip Lopez's amazing charcuterie, cheese, and more seasonal dishes.
