UPDATE 9/5/13: Apple Barrel will remain open under different management. Read about the switcheroo here.
This is difficult to digest, but according to NoDef Frenchmen Street institution the Apple Barrel (609 Frenchmen) will be shuttering on November 1, All Saints Day. It's hard to believe the favorite hangout of late great Coco Robicheaux, that tiny, dank joint known for blues jams, dollar bills, more local color than HBO could possibly ever capture on Treme, and many an Adolfo's pre-drink, will be no more. But apparently longtime owners Liz Montoya and Douglas Hopper, who've operated the club since the mid-70s, have been refused a lease renewal.
According to NoDef, Creole Italian dive Adolfo's will remain open upstairs. Meanwhile, The Times Pic reports that nobody at the bar is confirming the news, so maybe there's a chance in hell this won't happen.
