FRENCH QUARTER?Another series of the occasional Galatorie's wine dinners starts next week on Wednesday, July 31. According to Ian McNulty, the dinners come as a bit of a respite for chefs who don't often get the chance to dabble in more contemporary dishes while they're working off of the frozen-in-time menu at the century-old French Quarter food museum. The featured wines at Wednesday's dinner will be provided by neuroscientist/winemaker/probable Batman Nicolas Bazan. [Gambit]
UPTOWN & METAIRIE?Holy brain freeze, Batman! The Times-Pic's Judy Walker gleefully reports that Sucré's pastry-provocateur Tariq Hanna has created a Gelato Po'boy, which is available at the Magazine Street and Lakeside Shopping Center Sucré locations. It also looks like it could feed a family of circus clowns?the choux pastry shell "bun" holds scoops of vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry ice cream, and is dressed with whipped cream, chocolate sauce, AND strawberry sauce, because why not? EVERYWHERE?The unfortunately-named COOLinary series has returned with a roster of participating restaurants offering two-to-three-course lunch menus for $20 or less, and three-course dinner menus for $35 or less during the month of August. [COOLinary]
EVERYWHERE?Author Lolis Eric Elie's Treme cookbook came out this week, and you ought to check it out if for no other reason than that you'll want context for Anthony Bourdain calling David Simon a "complete food slut." [Twitter]
UPTOWN?If you're looking for a PG way to spend your Friday evening, look no further than the swath of pavement between the 4100 and 4200 blocks of Magazine Street. Small businesses in the area will participate in the Cool Down Block Party, offering up cool foods (ceviche from Dominiques) and cool drinks (Mediterranean iced teas from Mona's). The shoe boutique Feet First will also be slinging some popsicles. [NoDef]
