In Memoriam

IM.jpgToday marks the 40th anniversary of the Upstairs Lounge fire, an arson attack on New Orleans' LGBT community that killed 32 people and injured another 60 in 1973. Though the fire remains one of the most violent attacks against the LGBT community in American history, media outlets largely ignored the blaze at the time. A memorial will be held at 5:00 pm in St. Mark's Methodist Church, followed by a 6:30 pm memorial service at the site of the fire (now Jimani Lounge) on Iberville and Chartres. [NO Def]
