Sophisticated mawmaws will need to shield their eyes with their feather boas come next week because Susan Langenhennig and Ian McNulty both report that Galatoire's new steakhouse 33 Bar & Steak will open on Wednesday, April 10, directly next door to the original grand dame.
Galatoire's acquired and renovated the vacant neighboring building (215 Bourbon) last year to some side-eyeing from their longtime clientele, but the newly opened Galatoire's Bar? located in front of the new steakhouse, and perhaps going a bit TAFKAP with the namechange (Is it called 33 Bar now?) ? has been a popular addition to the Quarter since opening around Mardi Gras.
Langenhennig reports that the name 33 comes from the building's original address, which was uncovered on the building's facade during renovations. The building had been vacant since Katrina, but locals may remember Mike Anderson's Seafood residing there before the storm.
Unlike Galatoire's, 33 will accept reservations (calm yourself). Galatoire's chef Michael Sichel is "overseeing the menu" of classic filet mignon/wedge salad steakhouse fare with a little bit of remouladey New Orleans flare, but no word on if there is another chef coming on board to oversee the kitchen. The restaurant's look is sort of masculine and clubhouse-like with a dark green/gold/chocolate color scheme, wood floors and wood-beamed ceilings, vintage maps, leather seating and enough crystal chandeliers to impress the Gabor sisters.
The bar at 33 is open at 11 a.m., seven days a week. The dining room will open for dinner Sunday through Thursday from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., and Friday and Saturday from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. It will also open for lunch on Fridays at 11 a.m.
