On March 13, the first annual Vendy Awards, the so called Oscars of street food started by nonprofit the Street Vendor Project, will hit the French Market to benefit the NOLA Food Truck Coalition and Slow Food NOLA. It's sure to be a tasty time, but in classic crazy celebratory fashion the first ever Brooklyn Brewery Mash will arrive in town at the same time, hosting ahuge food and booze filled week of events that benefit Slow Foods as well. Basically, from March 13-16, New Orleans will have a lot of dining and drinking events going on, so here's the low down.
1.) The Vendy Awards
Where: French Market
When: Wednesday, March 13, 7 to 10 p.m.
Cost: $36 for admission plus food/drink, $6 for admission
After eight years in New York and events in LA and Philadelphia, the Vendy Awards? where "NOLA's food trucks, carts and every other type of sidewalk chef will compete in a cook-off to determine the BEST street food vendor in the city"? will show off NOLA's finest food vendors while raising money for the New Orleans Food Truck Coalition & Slow Food NOLA. You can nominate your favorite food truck/vendor here.
2.) "Local 2 Ways Dinner"
Where: Maurepas Foods, 3200 Burgundy Street
When: Thursday, March 14
Cost: $70 (includes tax/tip)
Chef Michael Doyle and Brooklyn Brewery's house chef Andrew Gerson create a multi-course beer dinner that's sure to be all things local and all things incredible.
3.) "Swamp to Table" dinner With Dinner Lab
Where: TBD
When: March 17, 5:00 p.m.
Cost: $80
Underground supper clubbers Dinner Lab host this dinner/fundraiser to benefit Slow Foods, with Chefs Paco Roberts and Andrew Gerson manning the kitchen, and featuring art instillations by both local and NYC artists.
4.) Togather Books and Beer
Where: Perestroika at Pravda
When: Saturday, March 16, 1 p.m.
Cost: $25, includes cookbook, beer, and candy samples
Original Slow Foods NOLA founder/lady of the roux Poppy Tooker and Brooklyn-based Liddabit Sweets chat about kitchen trickery and other culinary topics at Cure Co's quarter destination, Perestroika at Pravda.
5.) NY Night Train Soul Clap & Dance-Off
Where: Siberia
When: Thursday, March 14
Cost: $7
At the stroke of 1 a.m. 1960s sould DJ Jonathan Toubin (who was hit by a vehicle in a freaking hotel room two years ago) will hold a dance competition with a $100 cash prize and a trip to New York for the Dance-Off championship at Brooklyn Bowl. King Louie One Man Band plays earlier in the evening.
