Brothers and burger afficianados Joe and Nick Spitale opened Atomic Burger on Veterans Boulevard back in late November, and the early word is that the liquid nitrogen chilled milkshake machine is the jam. Todd A. Price of the The Times-Pic reports: "All eyes are drawn to the milkshake machine enveloped in a white cloud like a rock band with their smoke machines running at full blast. With an injection of super cold liquid nitrogen, the ice cream base is converted to a thick milkshake in a matter of seconds." The bad news: the milkshake machine happens to be a kid-magnet, which means there will probably be hoards of greasy-fingered youngsters blocking your view of the best dry-ice show to roll into town since Foghat '75.
As for the quality of their craft burgers, fries, and edamame, early Yelp reviews are a mixed bag, but Price seems convinced: "Atomic Burger unapologetically makes fast food. But the quality harkens back to a time before fast food arrived frozen and preprocessed." And co-owner Joe Spitale tells Scott Gold, "All meat is ground in-house daily, fries are hand-cut from real potatoes, along with locally baked bread, fresh vegetables and a homemade ice cream base for the Atomic Freeze milkshakes."
