While the origins of National Rum Day may forever remain a mystery, let's still use this as an excuse to drink. Here is a short list of places to wet your whistle, toot your horn and celebrate that sweet, sweet sugar cane.
1) Pal's Lounge
Location: 949 N. Rendon
While many people venture here to gawk at vintage porn in the bathroom, some tipsters claim this neighborhood bar is home to the best Dark and Stormy in the city. What makes it so good? The glass mug and the extremely strong ginger beer.
2) Gene's Curbside Daiquiris
Location: corner of Elysian Fields and St. Claude
Perhaps it's the hot pink building, the crazy mannequin near the door, or the long line that spills out the door that assures this Marigny daiquiri shop with flavors like Booty Call and What The F--K is sure to freeze your brain.
3) Maurepas Foods
Location: 3200 Burgundy
With a slew of rum-based craft cocktails featuring everything from egg whites to falernum, Maurepas also has the Bywater Daiquiri, its sweet take on the handshaken original.
4) Rum House
Location: 3128 Magazine
The name says it all. They have enough types of rum to satiate a pirate. They offer $5 rum drinks for happy hour weekdays from 3-6p.m. Also on hand, a mighty list of tacos and Caribbean style food. But expect a wait amongst the young and hip that gather among this stretch area of Magazine.
5) Bellocq
Location: 936 St Charles (inside the Hotel Modern)
Just voted one of the best bars in the U.S. by Jim Meehan, the Bellocq crew has rum drinks, rhum drinks, and rum and rhum drinks. An extensive menu features only the finest spirits and handmade accoutrement.
