Later this month, Kakkoii Japanese Bistreaux will open on the star-crossed stretch of Maple Street that has long-been notorious for bars catering to a steady clientele of underage university students. Kakkoii, which, according to co-owner Toan Tran, is the Japanese word for something "cool" or "awesome," received strong support from the City Council Thursday for its plan to transform a troublesome college bar into a serene Japanese bistro.
Though some residents in the area worry that Kakkoii, with its license to serve alcohol, could "morph" back into a bar, Councilwoman Susan Guidry explained that Kakkoii's 10 p.m. closing time (midnight on the weekends) would help keep it decidedly in the realm of restaurants.
