Attendees at the New Orleans Wine & Food Experience's Grand Tastings may have noticed that a whole lot of restaurants there had the words "Gold," "Silver" or "Bronze" attached to their stations. These were the winners of the Fleur de Lis Culinary Awards, NOWFE's juried competition. A couple of weeks before NOWFE, a pack of judges descended upon each of the participating restaurants, eating the dish that would be offered at the Grand Tastings, and judging accordingly.
The Best in Show winners?Phillip Lopez of Root in the sweets bracket and Gregg Zeringue of the Westin's Green Bar in savory?were announced before the events. The rest of the winners were there, obviously, but with six categories with at least three winners each (there were several ties, and the "Seafood" category actually had five different gold medal winners, for different types of seafood) it could have been pretty overwhelming. Luckily, the full, more easily digested list of Fleur de Lis Culinary Award winners is now out.
