What, exactly, is a 'try before you die' restaurant? At its most basic, it's a restaurant that you feel you absolutely must try at least once in your lifetime. (Duh.) This means it's exceptional, going above and beyond favorite restaurant status such that?ugh!?one of these days you're going to have to get there.
A week and a half ago, Eater asked readers this question: What are those "try before you die" restaurants for New Orleans? The answers were all over the board, ranging from the old-line institutions to innovative new players to neighborhood joints. (One interesting note to come out of this: most of the biggest vote-getters were in the Quarter, which says something about something.) After parsing down the dozens of recommendations to find the 12 most iconic and most exceptionally exceptional restaurants, here is Eater NOLA's first reader-generated map, a guide to those restaurants that everyone must try at least once.
